Story Snippet (7) POV: Cristin

“You’ve been undesirably distracted lately,” Eed noted after Cristin trialed off for the second time that day, “I’ve never seen you this way since you were five.”
Cristin sighed, he was well aware of his sudden lack of proper attention, but he couldn’t seem to do anything about it; it had been that way the entire week after that day.

Indeed, it had been seven days since he’d watched the Onyx Division walk out with that stranger, Kasi, after which Cristin had returned to his Study Room to make up for lost time and hadn’t been properly motivated since. Whenever he tried to focus on the language he was currently studying, his mind would reflect back on that short time he had, and he would begin to feel things he hadn’t remembered feeling for a long time. It was sort of unnerving, considering Cristin had a hard time regulating his emotions already, so these resurfacing feelings were messing with him. Of course, if he let himself think about it, he was sure of what it was. Perhaps this was the aftermath of a missed opportunity, something he had longed for years prior but didn’t think would ever happen; it was also ridiculous and naive thoughts that began to surface, and he quickly regained his senses.

He had dozed off again.

“Perhaps a change of pace is in order,” Eed offered, tapping Cristin’s shoulder to get his attention, “or a revisiting of past practices?”

Cristin turned to look at Eed.

“What are your thoughts?”

“Well,” she began, “it is only reasonable that after doing so poorly on one’s first attempt at what they have been learning to do their entire life, that you would become unmotivated and lacking in self-confidence, of which you are clearly displaying.”

“Sure… let’s go with that.”

“Therefore, to be able to continue with your current studies, I believe some time to repair this issue of yours is something that is currently needed, as I will not let this roadblock waste potential learning.”

Cristin thought for a second, wondering what Eed was thinking; she sure knew how to drag out a revealing.

“Alright, go on.”

For a second Eed’s white eyes seemed to flash with a soft purple.

“What do you say about continuing your studies in the language of the Adaptors?”
