Story Snippet (6) POV: Cristin

As he guessed, a few Chandalyns walked through the door, they had an air of seriousness to them as they approached, wearing blank expressions and similar uniforms with the distinctive black coloring paired with white. These were indeed Chandalyns from the Onyx Division, though it was Cristin’s first time seeing them in person. They certainly matched the rumors he had heard about them, and looking at them face to face made him slightly uneasy.

Even so, Cristin rushed to get up and nodded slightly, his mind racing with all the etiquette and rules he had been taught throughout his life, the presence of adults making him more nervous.

The Chandalyn on the right, a female with loose dark blue hair and stern eyes, motioned to the side with her head, and Cristin realized that he was still standing in front of Kasi.

He cleared his throat softly as he moved away, hoping he didn’t look too flustered in that moment.

Kasi was looking up from his position with questioning eyes, seeming unsure of what was happening, which was strange, considering he should have had similar escorts in the Capital.

Then again, the whole situation was strange, considering Kasi as a guest should have been given proper clothing upon entering the Capital, and shouldn’t have been allowed to wander on his own, certainly not long enough to find his way into the grounds of the Amethyst House.

Along with this, the two Onyx Chandalyns were currently talking quietly to each other.

“Doesn’t seem Xemish or Human, but appears civil,” the woman said.

Her companion, a male of tall stature with blond hair and judging eyes whispered back, “even so, you can’t be too careful.”

He motioned for Kasi to get up, and thankfully Kasi seemed to understand the message.

Crystal cuffs were clasped onto Kasi’s wrists, and the two Chandalyn’s positioned themselves between him.

“Very well, let’s go,” the woman said.

“Wait,” Cristin said, “what’s happening?”

What was he doing? He should know not to question his superiors.

The Onyx Division officers ignored him, making their way back to the door.

“Excuse me, I think I may be of some help,” Cristin continued, unsure of the words leaving his mouth as he picked up his pace slightly to keep up with the Chandalyns.

“I’m an interpreter, you see.”

“Of course you probably have plenty of great interpreters in the Capital.”

“But if you ever need it, I know his language.”

“Just…”

Kasi glanced back at Cristin, his strange eyes meeting his.

Then Cristin was standing alone.
