Chapter 1: The Strange Visitor

Story Snippet (5) POV: Cristin

It wasn’t much longer until the other Aides left with the children to return to the nursery, but Cristin and Eed had to stay until the Onyx Division arrived. As such, Cristin was now sitting next to Kasi, neither saying much; meanwhile Eed seemed to have decided her role in things was completed, and disappeared.

Cristin was currently in a war with his thoughts as he rustled with the desire to use this chance to speak with someone from another species, yet at the same time he had no idea how to go about it, especially with his very limited knowledge on Kasi’s language. Seriously, how did those at the Ruby or Emerald House do it? Cristin had heard they were all great at socializing, so surely he could just imitate them…

Before he could change his mind, Cristin carefully maneuvered himself to be in front of Kasi.

“How did you get out of the Capital?” He started, attempting to initiate some kind of conversation.

Unfortunately he only seemed to surprise and confuse Kasi, who’d been previously looking at his hands.

Oops, Cristin thought moving in front and making eye contact was supposed to be the best way to subconsciously convey that he was about to make conversation.

“What?”

Cristin’s face dropped, did he use the wrong vocabulary? Was his accent off? He must have used the wrong word ending… this was going to be more difficult than he thought.

He paused for a second, “how did you get here?” He tried instead.

Kasi blinked, his expression an unreadable sheet, it was almost like he was looking at something beyond Cristin; it reminded him of when he would look into Eed’s white void eyes.

“I’m not really sure I’m even here…”

Cristin felt bad, Kasi spoke in a tone of voice not unlike someone with something meaningful to say, soft and carefully sounded, yet Cristin was unsure his ability to translate such a language as Kasi’s was doing it justice; why couldn’t the first separate species he spoke with speak Xemish? It was Cristin’s second language and as such he was most fluent in it.

“I don’t think I understand,” Cristin said, “you look real to me.”

Before another word was added Kasi’s cast down gaze regained its energy as he was alerted to something outside; Cristin knew what it was, which meant his conversation was over.
