Chapter 1: The Strange Visitor
Story Snippet (4) POV: Cristin.
Cristin timidly walked over to the man, who, now that he was standing, was probably the tallest person Cristin had seen in his life. He was at least six inches taller than Cristin was, and it made him a lot more intimidating than at first. Though it did help that the young Chandalyns had now decided to use the man as a climbing tool, hanging themselves off his arms and trying to jump on his back, so if that’s all they interpreted his height as, then maybe it wasn’t so bad.
Either way, Cristin was in front of him now, and realized that staring into his bright yellow eyes did not make for a great introduction, though in his defense he was trying not to look at any of the other distracting features this new individual had; like his tanned and very, very uncovered arms, or his bare feet. He appeared to be wearing some form of tight black suit, but wore a pair of very loose brown pants over it, it seemed they were otherwise kept up by a tight band covering most of his waist and; well dang, that backfired, didn’t it? Back to looking at the eyes.
Cristin cleared his throat softly, “You’re name?” He asked, switching languages to what he hoped he had heard as Eed waved the children back towards their Aides.
The man stopped dead in his tracks as he was attempting to keep one of the small Chandalyns from retrieving his conical hat, and they ran off with their new prize, giggling.
“You speak my language?” He asked, or, that’s what Cristin assumed he asked, he was sort of summarizing with what he could understand.
“I was right!” Cristin announced in his own language, seeming to startle the man.
Cristin turned accusingly toward Eed, who had now stationed herself as usual behind him.
“Why does he speak the language you claimed you made up for my learning exercises?!”
Eed didn’t budge, or move at all for that matter.
“Oh Cristin,” she said softly, with the tone she often used when Cristin had spoken of something obvious, “you should know that as an Aide, I speak of only known and needed information; as such, it is simply impossible for me to ‘make something up.’”
“Obviously this is merely a coincidental situation where the language I pulled from my head just happened to be this individual’s language, nothing more, nothing less.”
Well, that would explain things…
“Now, I do believe you’ve managed to confuse the young man behind you; one of the main things you never want to see when attempting communication between parties, so I will be subtracting points from that.”
Cristin frowned, upset that Eed was turning the interaction into a test, but turned back at the man who, as she said, was definitely confused, though his expression barely showed it.
Cristin exhaled nervously, “Sorry, my name is Cristin. You are?”
The man’s mouth twitched, like he was trying to stop himself from smiling.
“You are very bad at this,” he replied, then motioned to himself, “my name is Kasi.”
