Story Snippet (1) (PAST) POV: Kasi.

“Shhh, hush little one, now is not the time to be crying,” the airy voice comforts the young boy, her hand delicately brushing a tear from his flushed cheek.

Kasi looks up towards the wisp hovering around his mother as she finishes strapping the bundle of colorful fabrics to his large pack.

“Springtime Peace is near, and I have been called to do special things for our world,” she pulls her hands down from the pack and cups his small face with them.

She smiles warmly, but his eyes blur the picture as more tears pool up.

“Now, I must go; here-“ she grabs a large conical hat from off the soft sand and pulls it toward Kasi, “take your father’s hat, a token of your family you will now carry with you through this life.”

Kasi reaches for it but hesitates, remembering flashes of that terrible night. When his mother sees him hesitate, she flips him around and clips the hat to the back of the pack, then turns him and wraps him in a hug.

“Remember what we’ve taught you little Kasi,” she whispers, her voice wavering, “patience is endurance; know how to choose your own fights, and know your place in this world; be braver by being smarter.”

Kasi begins to sniffle, his mother’s clothes wrinkling under his fingers as he tries to grip her tighter, her blue hair tickling his cheek, now covered in wet trails.

“Kasi, please, I have to go,” she whispers, pulling his hands away from her, “please, little one, this is hard for me as well.”

The wisp tugs at her clothes, and she pulls herself up off the sand. Closing her eyes, she touches her forehead to the Wisp’s, whispering:

“Take me there.”

And then she was gone, leaving the small boy in the landscape of sand pillars, the lacy fabrics tied to them twisting in the breeze.
