Story Snippet (1) (PAST) POV: Eed.

“Exhausting, isn’t it, they just don’t know how to sit still like the older ones do.” Eed watched with arms crossed as the five year old Chandalyn in front of her waved his legs back and forth, violently sucking down his violet slushy with extra crystal chunks through the thick marble straw, “Slow down Cristin, the inside of your throat may be thick but you can still choke on stupidity.”
Cristin paid her no attention from the other side of the walkway, quietly listening to the other kids as they talked about their crystals. “What’s exhausting is that for the past five Chandalyn years I’ve had to call you Purple Eed, and the other over there Blue Eed, I swear it’s like these little creatures will die if at least three of them don’t use that name for every group of five.”
“So smart yet so unoriginal,” the Aides chorused, shaking their heads.
“Ava, you don’t get to talk, not only were you given a unique name, but you were blessed with an absolute gem of a Chandalyn.”
Ava patted the head of the small girl next to her, sitting with her legs propped together and delicately chewing on a crystal shaving while reading a text book.
“It’s true, she’s going to be indispensable as an architect when she’s an adult, she’ll do wonders for the future.”
“That’s right, Eed, aren’t you teaching Cristin to become an interpreter?”
“Of course,” Eed said, switching to Xemish.
“I despise when you do that.”
Ava sighed, “the poor kid, doesn’t know what’s going to happen.”
Eed huffed, “It matters not,” she turned to look over at the small Chandalyn, “I will give this child a fulfilling life in the time we have.”
